Kepala Dinas Kelautan dan Pertanian DKI Jakarta, Ipih Ruyani menuturkan empat cara berikut ini diharapkan bisa memperlambat pergerakan hama ulat bulu. Hal tersebut disampaikan Ipih, di Balaikota, Jakarta. Cara-cara yang bisa dilakukan yakni:

1. Lakukanlah pengamatan populasi ulat bulu pada permukaan daun bagian bawah sehingga bisa diketahui sedini mungkin apabila perkembangan ulat bulu meningkat. Pengamatan bisa dilakukan dua minggu sekali.

2. Terkait sanitasi. Kalau ada pohon-pohon, jangan sempai serasah atau daun-daun keringnya menumpuh karena bisa menjadikan tempat lebih lembap dan mempercepat ulat berkembang biak.

3. Lakukan pemusnahan telur dan pupa atau kepompong. Cara ini akan memutuskan siklus metamorfosis menjadi ulat bulu. Apabila sudah menjadi kupu-kupu maka kumpulkan lalu dibakar.

4. Penyemprotan insektisida yang efektif dilakukan secara massal dan serentak.

Menurut Ipih, dampak ulat bulu pada manusia pada dasarnya ringan, berupa gatal-gatal di kulit. Untuk mencegah gatal-gatal itu, Ipih menyarankan warga untuk menghindari kontak langsung dengan ulat bulu, mencuci tangan, menutup makanan dan minuman, dan langsung segera kontak ke puskesmas dan fasilitas kesehatan terdekat bila gangguan menjadi parah.
